GM WRITES A GUIDEBOOK FOR A GREEN RESORT -BUT SHOULD BE AN EXAMPLE AND FOLLOWED BY OTHER RESORTS
Zeavola is a luxury barefoot resort that takes pleasure in stepping back to simplicity on the beautiful Koh Phi Phi Don island, Hat NopparatThara-Ko Phi Phi National Park, in the Andaman Sea. The Phi Phi Islands are probably most famed for the Leonardo di Caprio film ‘The Beach’ which was released back in 2002. There has been worldwide media coverage about the damage that has caused by mass-tourism and day trippers visiting the famed Maya Bay and its subsequent closure.
Florian Hallerman (original from Austria), the custodian of Zeavola, is a keen environmentalist and has made tremendous changes within the resort.
‘The Little Green Book’ is an amusing insight into the challenges that he has faced in creating sustainable luxury in a remote destination.
Throughout the book, there are personal stories that have involved naughty cockerels, fat snakes and cute kitties, not to mention red tractors, vanishing sand, towering castles and sea gypsies. Hallerman talks about how he has humbly taken advice and inspiration by leaders in sustainability.
A relatively simple project of replacing plastic packaging for deliveries that comes from the mainland of Thailand or Phuket each week saves a staggering 260kg per year. Implementing his own drinking water bottling plant, and #refillmybottle water stations throughout the resort reduce single-use plastic bottles by 120,000 per year. Following water purification methods designed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the late King of Thailand, over 280 million litres of water is filtered each year. These results for such a small resort are staggering.
The book is broken up into easy-read sections that guide readers through his incredible journey, partnerships with renowned sustainability practitioners and the local community. There are of course mentions of superheroes and interesting dealings. All of the proceeds of this book will directly be immersed into other sustainability projects, working keenly with the local community and the ongoing protection of this fragile environment.
Hallerman and the Zeavola family hope that The Little Green Book is an enjoyable read, and that any personal visits to Thailand include stepping back to simplicity at the remarkable Zeavola Resort.
